Asia is recognised as an important region for the Cook Islands in terms of accessing development cooperation through the establishment of economic and political relations. The Cook Islands has diplomatic relations with six countries in Asia including the People’s Republic of China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Timor Leste and Iran. The Cook Islands engagement with the Asian region has correlated with the growing engagement of the Pacific region with Asia. The China-Pacific Islands Framework Agreement signed in 2006 provides the framework for the Cook Islands economic and political engagement with China at both the bilateral and regional levels. The Cook Islands-India relationship is poised for future growth and builds on India’s participation in the Pacific Forum as a post-Forum dialogue partner. The three yearly Leaders meeting between Japan and Pacific Island Countries provides the framework for the Cook Islands engagement with Japan. Japan being an important export market for Cook Islands tuna, black pearls and noni.Raising the level and scope of the Cook Islands engagement with Asia is a long term commitment and efforts are focused both through bilateral and multilateral forums. The Cook Islands is exploring ways link into ecnomic growth with Asia. In addition to expanding opportunities for trade in goods, tourism is another area of interest for the Cook Islands in Asia.
